A POWERFUL TOOL IN YOUR HANDS
Grafiti® app allows users to customize charts and share them on their social network. What are the most important issues to Americans? What NBA team leads in winning percentages? Is what the President saying true? Let’s fact check that. The app dives into the data and visualizes them into customizable charts. The users are then able to tweak the charts, customize them to colors they want, and allows for comments added comments. Once happy users can share it on all social platforms.
I was tasked with overseeing the entire foundation of the app to not only refresh the app, but also to bring validity and enthusiasm to the brand. I led the design refresh in three key areas of the app:
Overall UI update
Options for improving user flow
Establish a design system and guidelines for engineers and designers
We started with the existing flow and came up with solutions to easily customize curated data, and make sharing socially seamless.
The UX challenge was the amount of customizing a user can do. Charts and graphs are challenging to express properly, so we came up with solutions to make the experience easier without compromising date integrity by limiting customizability and providing a set of options.
The user first sees cards of various topics curated by the app. The redesign separates each card clearly and with a set of fonts that makes the titles bold and easy to see, while the description acts to support the topic and invites the users to take a deeper dive into the topic. The redesign also utilizes a template which establishes a clear division of titles and description while maintaining flexibility for different types of charts.
Other highlights include prototyping navigation and search bar, which are given ample sizing to allow the core functions to be a breeze.
Once the user chooses one of the carefully curated topics, they can customize the chart in three ways:
The user chooses the data points to highlight.
The type of chart, from bar charts to plot lines.
The color pairings to match the tone.
The user starts with which data to highlight and compare, and this is done in one mode, always below the chart, which is being updated live. User then uses the toggle function to customize the colors and chart type. Once satisfied the user moves onto adding their comment before choosing their social network of choice. The data is packaged and posted.
The chosen fonts are always acting on two levels: First, they have to be legible and convey messages clearly. Second, they are the representative of the brand’s message, and displays characteristics and the voice of the brand. With Grafiti the chosen typefaces must convey the personality of the enthusiastic brand who allows the users to customize their own voice, while showing the topics’ data to give relevancy and trust.
DASHES OF COLOR
Color combinations in an environment like an information graphic or charts needs to be consistent and coordinated so as to not be distracting. A tough act when the app itself gives users the freedom to give charts the flair they want.
The color sets are meant to have personalities and show how much volume the topic delivers, from the subtle to loud, perplexing to certainty, colors are important part of voicing the users' opinions appropriately.
SHAPING OUR OPINIONS MORE ACCURATELY
The very face of news seems to be changing, and if one thing is certain, media and what they cover are always evolving, whether they are the truth or not. We have a baker's dozen way of getting and sharing news, it makes sense that we ourselves should have our own customized visuals and insights to share. With easy to use and intuitive interface users will add their own flairs and feel a sense of empowerment.
I was fortunate to be a part of the brand that is shaping how we share information, and hope that Grafiti keeps evolving for the users.
